The Mystery of Tibetan’s Sky Burial.

Sky burial is a ritual that has great religious meaning. In fact, the Tibetan people are encouraged to watch this ritual, to face death openly and to feel the impermanence of life. Tibetan residents believe that the body is no more than an empty vessel – spirit, or soul, of someone out of the body that will continue the cycle of life to another life …

That’s a little synopsis of the article about the sky burial practiced by the people of Tibet. “Other fields of other locusts” is a saying that best describes the unique culture of the people of Tibet. Therefore, the images displayed in this entry ared extended images of friends through e-mail, which not only encouraged the author to find detailed information about the image, but also realise that these images have the potential to serve as a source of teaching and learning, as well as to be aquainted with the mysteries of Tibetan burial.

This unique cultural element not only has its own mystery, but it is also important as an element in cultural studies to understand  better the concept of culture, spirit and mind of the Tibetan residents. In fact, the Tibetan residents in spirituality clearly demonstrates the concept of Universality that everything must return to its origin. Similarly, in this culture of the sky burial, the dead body will be given to the nature as the spirit return to the universal consciousness. Furthermore, the sky burial culture not only gives us an opportunity to realise the importance of the recycle concept but also stresses on the importance of making sure the spirit of the deceased person ascends to the higher spirit world to continue its life.

From the environment aspects, the sky burial positively contributes in housekeeping  of the environment cleanliness and saves every inch of  the ground space for other activities of humankind instead of sparing some space for burial ground. Furthermore, it was stated that in the sky burial ceremonies, no photographs are allowed, yet we however, have the opportunity to witness the sky burial at no cost and this is an opportunity to open up our minds. Therefore, these images are very valuable for we can use them as a reference in future as well as to utilise them as unique resources for personal spiritual development.

The scenery in Tibet.

The mystical of the sky burial ritual begins on the third day of death where monks chant around the corpse, and before the day of the sky burial, the corpse will be cleaned and wrapped in white cloth and positioned in the same way of how one was born. In the ritual, Lamas will lead the ritual procession to charnel ground and chanting by means of guiding the soul to proceed on to the next level of life.

Then, the body breakers will start their task after the ritual ends that must be completed before sunset and at the same time the juniper incense is burned to summon the vultures for their tasks as Dakinis. The corpse will then unwrap and the first cut is made on the back using hatchets and cleavers to quickly cut the body up in a definite and precise way. The flesh cut into chunks of meat. Meanwhile, the internal organs cut into pieces, bones are smashed into splinters and then mixed with tsampa, roasted barley flour before given to the vultures and the entire body of the deceased should be eaten by the vultures to assure the ascent the soul of the deceased.
